In an era of science and technology, there are still traces that show humanity has still not truly evolved. Especially when it comes to equality, security and basic human rights for women.

Iraq is currently facing a radical ISIS-led insurgency, with several cities under militant control. The latest news is that ISIS has allegedly called for all girls between the age of 11 and 46 to undergo mandatory FGM. UN estimates suggest this could effect upto 4 million women.

What I find most disturbing is the rationale behind this medieval crime against humanity. The ritual cutting of girls' genitals is practised in the belief it prepares them for adulthood or marriage. Amongst practitioners, the most often cited reason for FGM is that it promotes female virginity and fidelity. Various ridiculous myths are associated with the clitoris (including how it makes men impotent). I find it much more believable these are the direct products of circumcisers who rely on regressive ideology to earn a living. 29 countries in Africa and the Middle East still practise Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). More than 130 million women alive today have undergone this vile practice. Genital Mutilation poses multiple health risks to women, including recurrent infections, chronic pain, cysts, fatal bleeding, problems urinating, infertility and increased risk of newborn deaths in childbirth. In 2012, the UN sanctioned a resolution calling all member states to ban FGM.

News agencies are currently investigating the authenticity of the ISIS FGM fatwa. I hope against hell that this is another time that social media got the story wrong.
